The Final Goodbye… For Now

A Message From the President

I’m sitting here in the Clubhouse…immersed in the sound of kids laughing and families moving around the pool deck. Coaches are hustling and encouraging the kids, and the Leaders are supporting it all. The starters’ whistle blows as the cheers of parents of all generations roar. Bob’s warm voice fills the air as he takes us through our final day of summer. This is the August Gala.

It’s been a magical 2024 summer here at CBSC whether in the pool, on the ocean or on the courts. We’ve had healthy competition, fun times, and lasting summer memories. And best of all, lifelong friendships were created, and others renewed to grow stronger!

This feels like home – CBSC Home!

In a few short hours, we’ll gather for our final trophy and awards ceremony. This year being extra special as the 100th anniversary of the Kidd medals will be given to the 6 youngest swimmers to have swum the tanks, followed by a photo of all Kidd medal recipients.

And then, like a curtain dropping after an outstanding performance, the Shelley Shield along with other ribbons and trophies will be awarded, and the sinking feeling of the end of summer and the warm goodbyes begin.

Thankfully, it’s our fond memories that carry us through the next 309 days when we meet to do this all over again. Until then, carry the spirit of CBSC with you.

And when you want to remember this summer, here’s a video about our summer ‘Home’. Enjoy!

The Noble Order of the Chair

On Thursday night at the Summer AGM, one of CBSC’s cherished and most honoured traditions, “The Chair” was once again awarded to a hardworking and better-together volunteer couple. It is reserved for our long-standing leaders who have volunteered countless hours for their lifetime achievement in the Club, setting an example for the rest of us. The chair has come full circle and has now come home to Brad and Linda.

And as tradition dictates, their award was presented in a poem:

The Noble Order of the Chair
Crescent Beach Swimming Club – 2024

At the end of some summers we bring out our chair

And award it to someone, or someones, most fair.

To garner this honour is no piece of cake;

Just a lifetime of service – that’s all that it takes.

Well, we’ve found a couple deserving such honours.

It’s long overdue – but that’s their fault not ours.

You can’t have the chair while you’re still on the board;

And if your house isn’t finished, the chair can’t be stored.

The CBSC board member with the most years of service

Has finally retired and the chair now deserveth.

He swam at the beach in the tanks with the Gairs,

And served as a lifeguard for many a year.

One of the founders of our lifeguard corporation;

Water safety for him is a preoccupation.

Except when he’s bare-footing or trick skiing

Or flipping his boat by the pier while out tubing – true story!

And forget not his wife, for she’s also a force;

Lending artistic flair to all things Seahorse.

Many shirts were designed, but her magnum opus

Was the CBSC banner that still has our focus.

They sang and they danced in countless PNO skits

And led the Snail River Run for the fun of the kids.

Speaking of kids, they had two of their own;

Both became guards, as if their father was cloned.

He was a dentist, but neither scary nor mean;

And she a flight attendant – quite a sight to be seen.

Both now retired, they live at the beach

In a house that took too many years to complete.

All they need is a chair for their well-deserved rest;

So tonight they shall have one, and this one’s the best.

The Perssons are chair-worthy, and also good fun.

Brad and Linda we thank you for all that you’ve done.

See you on Reg Day when Summer 2025 begins!
