WATERPOLO SUMMER 2010
Welcome to the summer of 2010 at the Crescent Beach Swimming Club! If you are new to the sport of water polo, it is an enjoyable co-ed team sport that is played with seven players a side including a goalie. Water polo is played in deep water pools, so players must be comfortable treading water and have a solid swimming background.
Developmental and Competitive Program
Younger players that have difficulties treading water will have a chance to develop their skills through our Developmental program. This program is designed to introduce the kids to the rules of the game, and help them understand the logistics of how the game is played. The ages of players in this program typically range from seven to nine years old. Practices will be held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 4pm – 4:45pm.
Our competitive program includes three different teams. All three teams will have a practice twice a day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The P1 team is our youngest team with players born in 1999 or any year after. This team will practice at 9am – 10am and 3:45pm – 4:45 pm. Our P2 team consists of players born in 1997 or 1998 and practices at 9am – 10am and 4:30pm – 5:30pm. Our P3 team consists of players born in 1995 and 1996 and practices at 8am – 9am and 5:15pm – 6:15pm. Players should be at practice at least 5 minutes early to stretch. If a competitive swim practice is at the same time as a water polo practice, players are excused from the water polo practice until the swim practice finishes as long as they attend the swim practice.
Registration Information & Fees
The registration fee for CBSC Water Polo will be $70.00/month for competitive programs and $35.00/month for the developmental program. This fee will cover the cost of three tournaments for the player as well as the regional tournament. If a team decides to attend more than three tournaments, you will be required to pay additional fees. In addition to this cost, players who would like to play in tournaments must be registered with BCSSA by July 8th. The BCSSA registration cost is $65.00 for the first competitive discipline, and the cost of each additional discipline will be $25.00.
Assuming teams will qualify for the Provincial Championships, each player is required to pay $25.00 for each day they attend provincials. This fee will cover the tournament entry fees and the cost of the competitive coaches traveling and staying out of town. Provincials this year will be held at the Canada Games Pool on August 16th to 18th in Kamloops.
Roster Selection Policy
For tournaments during the season (with the exception of the regional and provincial tournaments), every effort will be made to ensure that all players that are registered with the BCSSA will be on the roster for the tournaments and that players have equal playtime at each tournament.
For the regional and provincial rosters, the BCSSA limits the number of water polo players that can be on a roster to 13. The team’s water polo coaches will decide which players will be listed on the regional and provincial rosters. The CBSC Swim Chair or Water Polo Parent Liaison will review and approve the final rosters for the regional and provincial teams. For the regional and provincial tournaments, the CBSC policy is to play to win, so all water polo players may not have equal playtime at those tournaments.
The following criteria will be used to select the water polo players for the regional and provincial teams: skill, ability to play as a team member, attendance, and attitude. In addition, as the BCSSA requires at least three girls and three boys to be in the water during all times at all games, the gender of the players must be considered in the selection process.
All-Girls Tournament
The Crescent Beach Swimming Club will be hosting an all-girls water polo tournament on the afternoon of Wednesday July 28th. As with any other tournament, the girls must be registered with BCSSA in order to compete in this tournament. Boys are welcome to come and cheer for the girls, and any assistance at the tournament would be much appreciated.
Communication
The CBSC Water Polo staff will be contacting parents throughout the summer by email, so please provide the coaches with your current email address on registration day. We ask that you would please check your email daily, since information regarding tournament scheduling can change as late as the night before the tournament, which has created problems in the past. Also, if the player you are registering wouldn’t mind receiving the same emails about tournament information, please feel free to supply the coaches with their email on registration day as well.
Parent Representatives
We will need a parent representative for each of the P1, P2 and P3 teams to help organize the car rides to the tournaments and any other team events. If you are able to volunteer for your child’s team as the parent representative, please speak to me on registration day.
For more information regarding our water polo program, you can talk to Kelsey Carter, Devon Seidel, Harrison Allen, Cameron Stevens, David Maybury or myself. We hope to see your kids in the pool!
Cheers,
Jason Carter
